About Aetherwild

Aetherwild is a 3D adventure through the Windward Isles, and it is unusually unhurried about it. There are three shrines to restore in Windward Vale, caches to find that are not marked for you, and a Hollow Alpha at the end that is a genuine fight rather than a cutscene.

The thing that makes it worth returning to is the career running underneath the exploration. Six expedition milestones take you from Wayfarer to Windward Champion, and they are earned from what you actually do in the valley rather than from a level counter ticking over.

Three blades, three ways to fight

Kael carries wind, Ember carries fire and Lyra carries frost, and they are swapped mid-fight rather than chosen at the start. That is the combat system: the right element at the right moment, with a dodge and a glide to buy you the time to make the swap.

The valley keeps your place

Your chapter saves on the device you played on — shrines restored, caches opened, shards and XP banked. Wander off mid-expedition and it will be waiting.

Controls

WASD to move, Shift to sprint, drag the mouse to look, J or click to attack, and Space to jump — press it again in the air to glide. M opens the map, and the three blades are on 1, 2 and 3.

How to play Aetherwild

  1. Give the title screen a moment while it prepares your adventure, then set out into Windward Vale. If you have played before in this browser, your chapter picks up where you left it.
  2. Check the world quest, The sleeping winds. Its first task is to defeat the guardians at the first shrine, and a trail of golden light shows you the way there.
  3. Walk with WASD, hold Shift to sprint and drag the mouse to look around. The left and right arrow keys orbit the camera if a hill or a tree is in the way.
  4. Fight with the sword combo on a click or J, and switch between Kael, Ember and Lyra with 1, 2 and 3.
  5. Press Space to jump, then press it again in mid-air to open your glider and drift across the hills. M opens the map.
  6. Restore all three shrines, then take on the Hollow Alpha. Once the shrines sing again, the valley stays open for you to explore and finish any caches you missed.

Aetherwild tips and strategy

  • Climb before you glide. The glider only opens on a second jump in the air, so a running jump from flat ground gives you very little. Start from a ridge or a hilltop and you can cover a long stretch of the vale in one go.
  • Treat the golden light as a guide, not a rule. It leads to the next objective, and the caches are deliberately off that line. Some of your best finds come from leaving the trail for a minute.
  • Use the map between objectives. M shows the whole valley. Checking it after each shrine makes it easier to spot ground you have not walked yet.
  • Practise the swap on the first guardians. The first shrine is a good place to get used to switching fighters in the middle of a combo, before the fights that really demand it.
  • Fix the camera, not your position. In tight spots the arrow-key orbit is quicker than walking around to see an enemy behind you. Keep it in mind when guardians surround a shrine.
  • Do not rush the Hollow Alpha. It is the last fight of the chapter, and every cache you open and every shard you bank on the way is a reason to explore fully before you go.

Who will enjoy Aetherwild

Aetherwild suits players who like exploring as much as fighting. There is no timer pushing you along, the main route is clearly lit, and the reward for curiosity is a cache tucked behind a hill rather than a pop-up telling you where to look. If you liked open-valley adventure games where getting to a high spot and gliding down is half the fun, this one will feel familiar in the best way.

It also works in short sessions. Because your chapter saves on the device you play on, you can restore one shrine, close the tab and come back to the next one later. If you ever want a clean start, the menu can erase this device's chapter progress so you can begin the expedition again.

Aetherwild — frequently asked questions

Is Aetherwild free?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download and no sign-up. Your chapter and career save in the browser you play in.

What is there to do in the valley?

Restore three shrines, find the caches nobody points you at, and beat the Hollow Alpha. The career layers six expedition milestones on top of that.

Do the three blades actually play differently?

Yes — wind, fire and frost are swapped during a fight, not picked before it. Matching the blade to the moment is most of the combat.

Does it save my progress?

Yes, in the browser you played in. Shrines, caches, shards and XP all persist.

Is there online play?

Not on this site. What is here is the single-player expedition and career, which is the complete game.

Does it work on a phone?

It runs, but it is a 3D game built around a keyboard. A laptop or desktop gives you much better control.

How do I glide?

Jump with Space, then press Space again while you are in the air to open the glider. It works best when you start from high ground.

Can I start the expedition again from the beginning?

Yes. The game has an option to erase this device's chapter progress and begin again. It only clears the save in the browser you are using, so progress kept on another device is not affected.

How do I find my way to the next shrine?

Follow the golden light, which leads to your current objective, or press M to open the map of the valley.
