About Blackwater Night Ledger

Blackwater is a night in a city that belongs to somebody else. You are keeping a ledger — witnesses, foundries, the people who actually run each district — and the game is the business of filling it in while the city would rather you did not.

It plays as free roam with a career running through it: drive, walk, shoot when it comes to that, and work through training and contracts that unlock as the ledger grows.

The city is the level

There is no corridor. Districts connect, the map is yours to read, and a job that looks impossible from the front usually has a way in from somewhere else. The journal keeps what you have learned so a night you abandon is not a night wasted.

Controls

WASD to move, mouse to aim and fire, E to use or enter a car, R to reload, Shift to run and Ctrl to crouch. M opens the city map and J the journal.

How to play Blackwater Night Ledger

  1. Start the story at Chapter 01, The Night Ledger. Your first stop is Granger Freight, where the ledger sits on a desk upstairs; the stairway runs along the warehouse’s east wall.
  2. Follow the gold diamond to each objective. J opens the quest journal, where you can track a quest to put its destination on your map, and M shows the whole city.
  3. Get behind cover by moving next to a low crate or barrier and pressing Q. Hold aim to peek out, and press Q again to leave cover.
  4. Press E beside the blue coupé to get in. W accelerates, S reverses or slows you down, A and D steer and Space brakes; slow down before you press E to climb out.
  5. Work through the chapters as the leads arrive: the ferryman at Crescent Market, then a fixer who offers a quiet way into Fenchurch Foundry or a diversion to pull the crew away.
  6. Once the story is done, the city stays open. Explore the four districts, pick up optional jobs from the journal or job boards, or start a new story.

Blackwater tips and strategy

  • Take guards down quietly. A quiet takedown lets you keep moving, while gunfire carries across a whole yard and brings the rest of the crew to you.
  • Do not walk away from a task. Switches, gates and other interactions need you to press E and stay nearby until the work finishes. Step off and it is interrupted, so clear the area first.
  • Keep the witness close. The witness at the foundry follows you on foot, and the escort has to be finished before you leave in the car. Move at a pace they can match.
  • Use the garage when you are low. Garage service costs $100 and restores your health and ammunition, with the coupé waiting beside the road afterwards. If you are short of cash, finish a job first.
  • Brake before the corners. The timed drives through marked road gates are lost on the bends, not the straights. Slow down for the final marker as well, or you will overshoot it.
  • Open the journal to think. The game and the job timers pause while the journal is open, so it is a safe place to check where you are going.
  • Toggle aim if holding is awkward. F switches aim on and off, which is handy on a trackpad when holding a button down and moving at the same time is fiddly.

Career, training and jobs

XP comes from eight story chapters and four optional jobs. Every 600 XP earns a level and one training point, and your progress stays in the browser even if you restart the story.

Training points go into two tracks with three ranks each. Vitality adds 10 maximum health per rank and Ammunition adds 24 reserve rounds per rank, so a fully trained character can take a noticeably longer firefight.

The jobs pay cash and reputation and each asks for something different. One has you collect a sealed parcel at the night market and drive it to South Bank inside 150 seconds, another sends you looking for three missing photographs around the park and river promenade, and a race takes you through six gates across three districts in 125 seconds. The stealth job pays a bonus on top of its fee if you stay quiet.

Blackwater Night Ledger — frequently asked questions

Is Blackwater free?

Yes, free in the browser with no download and no sign-up. Your ledger and career save in the browser you play in.

Is it open world?

It is an open city — districts you can move between freely, with a career and training running through it rather than a mission corridor.

What is the ledger?

The record you are building: witnesses, places and the people who run each district. Filling it in is the game.

Can I just drive around?

Yes. Free roam is a mode in its own right, with the career available whenever you want it.

Is there online play?

Not on this site. The city, the career and the training are the complete game here.

Does it work on a phone?

It runs, but it is built for a keyboard and mouse. A laptop or desktop is much better.

How do I take cover?

Move beside a low crate or barrier and press Q. Hold aim to peek out over it, and press Q again when you want to leave cover.

How do I restore health and ammunition?

Visit the garage. Its service costs $100 and refills your health and ammo, and your coupé will be ready beside the road.

What do training points do?

You earn one every 600 XP. Spend them on Vitality, which adds 10 maximum health per rank, or Ammunition, which adds 24 reserve rounds per rank, up to three ranks each.
