About Gilli Danda

Gilli danda is one of the oldest street games in the subcontinent and it has been played with two bits of wood for centuries. This is that game: flick the small gilli into the air off the ground, hit it with the danda, and score in danda lengths. Three wickets and your innings is over.

The part that surprises people is the flick. Getting the gilli up is a shot in itself, and a bad one leaves you swinging at something in the wrong place. The game scores direction, strength and flight separately, which is why two hits that look the same are worth very different amounts.

Village to nationals

The career runs six events — Village Friendly, Mandal Meet, District Cup, State Qualifier, Interstate Trophy and National Maidan — each with a target to beat before the next opens. Targets climb from 80 danda lengths to 430, which sounds impossible until the timing starts working.

Other ways to play

Solo with three wickets, practice with unlimited tries, pass-and-play for two people on one keyboard, and a local knockout tournament. The practice mode is not a tutorial — it is the same game without the innings ending, which is what you actually want while learning the flick.

Controls

Space flicks the gilli and Space strikes it. Direction, strength and flight are set before the shot, and the timing assist can be left on while you learn or switched off once it is in the way.

How to play Gilli Danda

  1. Choose a game type from the menu: Solo with three wickets, Practice with unlimited tries, Two players pass and play, Career from village to nationals, or the Local knockout tournament.
  2. Look at where the computer fielders are standing and set the shot with the three sliders. Direction runs 60 degrees either side of straight (A and D or the left and right arrows nudge it five degrees at a time), strength runs from 30 to 100, and flight sets how high the gilli goes.
  3. Press Space or Flick gilli to pop the gilli off the ground. Prompts in the corner tell you when it is rising and when it is falling.
  4. Press again while the gilli is falling through the gold strike band. If you swing outside the band, it counts as a miss.
  5. Watch the landing. A fielder may catch it, or they may throw it back at your danda lying on the ground. If the throw misses, the distance counts, worked out as metres divided by 0.8 and rounded down to whole danda lengths.
  6. Your innings ends after six scoring shots or three outs. In pass and play, hand the device over and the higher total wins.

Gilli Danda tips and strategy

  • Strike on the way down, never on the way up. A swing while the gilli is still rising loses about a third of its quality, which costs you a lot of distance.
  • Use the gaps, not full power. A catch before the first bounce is an out, so a medium-strength shot into empty ground is worth more than a big hit straight at a fielder.
  • Lower the flight when catches keep coming. After a caught shot, the game itself suggests a lower flight. A flatter gilli is in the air for less time, so the fielders have less time to get under it.
  • Three misses also make an out. Whiffing three strikes in a row costs a wicket just as a catch does, so in a tight innings take a safe, well-timed strike over a risky one.
  • Keep the timing assist on in practice. It slows only the flick stage, so you can see the gold band clearly. Switch it off once your timing holds up, because the real-time gilli drops through the band much faster.
  • Guard against the return throw. A shot that stops short leaves the fielder an easy throw at your danda, and a hit there is an out with no score. Distance and placement protect you as well as score points.

Medals and the career ladder

Clearing a career target earns a bronze medal, and that is all you need to open the next event. Going 20 per cent past the target earns silver, and 50 per cent past it earns gold. A gold at the Village Friendly therefore means 120 danda lengths in one innings, and a gold at the National Maidan means 645. The career screen keeps your best innings for each event, the number of events cleared, your XP and the total number of innings you have played. Your career can be exported to a save file and imported on another browser.

The Local knockout tournament takes four or eight player names, typed one per line, and pairs them into fixtures on a single device. Each fixture has two innings, the winner goes through, and a tie is replayed. It is a good way to settle the old argument about distance at a family gathering.

Gilli Danda — frequently asked questions

Is Gilli Danda free?

Yes, free in the browser with no download and no sign-up. Your career and best scores save in the browser you play in.

How is it scored?

In danda lengths — the distance the gilli travels, measured in sticks. Direction, strength and flight all feed into the result, so a clean strike is worth far more than a lucky one.

How many events are in the career?

Six, from Village Friendly to National Maidan, with targets from 80 up to 430 danda lengths. Each one has to be cleared to open the next.

Can two people play?

Yes, pass and play on one keyboard, plus a local knockout tournament for a group.

What is the timing assist?

A helper that shows the flick window. It is on by default and can be switched off in the menu, which is worth doing once the timing is familiar.

Is there online play?

Not on this site. The career, the tournament and pass-and-play are the complete game here.

How do I get out in Gilli Danda?

There are three ways: a fielder catches the gilli before its first bounce, a fielder's return throw hits your grounded danda, or you miss the strike three times. Three outs end the innings.

What do the bronze, silver and gold medals mean?

Bronze is awarded for meeting an event's target and is enough to unlock the next event. Silver needs 20 per cent more than the target and gold needs 50 per cent more.

How many players can the local tournament take?

Four or eight. Type the names one per line, and the game runs a knockout bracket on the same device.
