About Fuse

Fuse is a racquet sport played with a lit bomb. A number rides on the ball and every racket that touches it burns the number down. Nobody wins by keeping the rally going — when the fuse reaches zero it goes off in the hand of whoever hit it last, and that player loses the point. The whole sport is the arithmetic of handing the burn across the net.

You have three shots and they cost different amounts. A drive burns one. A burst burns two, flies fast enough to be genuinely hard to reach, and misfires once in twelve. A tap burns nothing at all, which sounds like the answer until you see what it costs: the ball floats back slowly and your opponent gets a free swing at it, and if the two of you float it eight times in a row the wick burns a charge anyway — paid by whoever played the eighth. So stalling is always available and never free, which is exactly why the fuse never settles into a solved sum.

How to play Fuse

Move your racket with the mouse or the W and S keys, and press SPACE to serve. The serve counts as a touch like any other, so it burns the fuse too.

Before you make contact, choose the shot you want with 1, 2 or 3 — or hold SHIFT to tap and SPACE to burst for a single shot. The choice is locked in the moment the ball reaches your strings.

Keep the ball in play and keep the fuse away from your own racket. The point ends when the fuse dies on somebody's shot, when a burst misfires, or when a player simply cannot reach the return. First to seven, win by two.

Fuse — frequently asked questions

Why would I ever play the slow shot?

Because a tap burns nothing, and sometimes the fuse is on a number where every shot that burns it kills you. The price is that a floated ball is easy to attack, and eight floats in a row cost a charge anyway, so a tap buys you time rather than safety.

Is the burst worth the misfire risk?

Usually yes. It burns two instead of one, which is what lets you skip past the number that would otherwise trap you, and it is the hardest shot in the game to return. Once in twelve it goes off in your own hand and the point is gone.

Does the server have an advantage?

Barely. The serve is worth about one and a half points in a hundred whichever fuse you start on, and the serve changes hands every two points, so a match is decided by how you play rather than by who went first.

What is the wick counter for?

It tracks how many times in a row the ball has been floated. A tap costs nothing on contact, but the wick keeps burning in the air — eight floats in a row take a charge off the fuse, and it comes out of the eighth player's account.

Which format should I start with?

Rally, on a fuse of ten. It gives you enough touches to see the pattern before the number gets dangerous. Duel starts at seven and Sudden at four, where the first mistake is usually the last one.
