About Slime Split

Slime Split is a grid puzzle in which you are a slime with a number on your body — your mass — and that number is the only resource in the game. Every level asks the same question: how much of yourself can you afford to leave behind, and where?

Split, and half of you steps in a direction while the rest stays put. A half can sit on a pressure plate to hold the doors open while the other half walks through. Only a mass of one or two fits through a grate. Spikes cost a point of mass to cross, acid costs two, and a slime that reaches zero is gone — and the level with it. Food adds one. Walk one slime into another and they merge again.

The exit wants a minimum mass, and that is where the arithmetic bites: a plate that needs three, a door that only opens while someone stands there, and an exit that wants four, all out of a body of six. The order you do things in is the whole puzzle.

There are sixty levels, four of them tutorials and the rest bred by a generator and gated by a solver. Every level is proven solvable, its par is the exact minimum number of actions, and from level five onward every level is proven impossible without splitting. Match par for three stars. A daily puzzle is generated from the date, proven in your browser, and identical for everyone.

How to play Slime Split

Move with the arrows, WASD, the on-screen pad, or a swipe. Each step is one tile.

Press X (or the ✂ button) and then a direction to split. The half steps that way; the rest stays.

Tab, C, or a tap on a slime switches which one you control. Walk one slime into another to merge.

Reach the star with at least the mass shown in the header. U undoes, R restarts.

How to play Slime Split, step by step

  1. Pick a level from the numbered grid on the home screen. Each one unlocks once the level before it has at least one star.
  2. Read the header before your first move. It shows the level number and name, the minimum mass the exit needs, and a footprint counter running against par.
  3. Step the active slime around the grid. The one you control is drawn brighter, with a white outline and open eyes; any others wait with their eyes closed.
  4. Arm a split with X, Space or the ✂ Split button. A pink "pick a direction to split" prompt appears over the board, and your next direction sends half of you that way. Shift plus an arrow does both in one press.
  5. Swap control with Tab, C or ⇄ Switch, and walk slimes into each other to recombine. A slime of mass 1 cannot divide any further, and the game tells you it is too small to split.
  6. Bring any one slime of the required mass onto the star. The level ends there and then, whatever the others are doing, and the results screen shows your moves, par and points with buttons for the next level or a retry for more stars.

Slime Split tips and strategy

  • Odd numbers split unevenly. The half that moves is always rounded down, so a 5 sends 2 and keeps 3. If the bigger piece needs to be on the far side, split the small half off backwards and walk the heavy remainder on.
  • Undo costs a move on the counter. Taking a step back restores the board but adds one to your move count rather than removing one. When a three-star attempt goes wrong early, R resets the counter to zero and is usually the better choice.
  • A slime cannot walk through a door its own plate is holding. Doors are checked after the mover has left its tile, so stepping off the plate shuts the door in front of it. Split off the plate instead: the half left behind keeps it pressed, as long as it still meets the plate's number.
  • Grates judge the moving half, not the whole slime. A 5 standing next to a grate can split a 2 straight through it in one action.
  • Splitting into a neighbour merges instantly. If the tile you split towards already holds a slime, the moving half joins it in the same action. That is the cheapest way to shift mass from one body to another.
  • Watch the plate rings. Each plate shows its ≥ number and turns green the moment a heavy-enough slime sits on it, so you can tell at a glance whether the doors will open.

Stars, points and badges

Stars are counted from your final move total: par or better earns three, anything within 40 per cent of par (rounded up) earns two, and any other finish earns one. Each star is worth 10 points, the first clear of a level adds 15, and the daily puzzle adds a 25-point bonus on top. Replaying a level for a better rating keeps your highest star count.

Level names come back later with a 2 or a 3 attached — "Held open 2", "Toll road 3" and so on. Each one is a harder variation on the same idea, so a trick learned early often unlocks its sequel. The daily puzzle is only accepted when its par sits between eight and eighteen actions and any no-split route is at least three moves longer, so it always needs a real split. Once you have finished it, the button shows your score until the next day.

Of the eight badges on the home screen, Trinity is the odd one out: it asks you to have three slimes alive at once in a level you go on to solve, which rarely happens by accident.

Slime Split — frequently asked questions

Is Slime Split free?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download and no sign-up. Stars and progress save in the browser you play in.

How many levels are there?

60, unlocking in order, plus a daily puzzle. Pars run from five actions to sixteen.

What does splitting do?

Half of your mass (rounded down) steps in the direction you choose; the rest stays. Each half can be controlled separately, and walking one into the other merges them.

What do plates, grates, spikes and acid do?

Plates hold doors open while a heavy-enough slime stands on them. Grates only pass a mass of one or two. Spikes cost one mass to cross, acid costs two, food gives one back.

What is par?

The minimum number of actions found by a solver. Matching it earns three stars; within about 40% of it earns two.

Are the levels guaranteed solvable?

Yes. Every level and every daily is run through a solver that must finish it — and, from level five on, must fail to finish it without splitting.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Swipe to move, tap the ✂ button then a direction to split, tap a slime to select it.

Does undo count against par?

Yes. Undo puts the board back but adds one to the move counter, so a run with several undos is unlikely to reach three stars. Restart resets the counter to zero.

Why can't my slime walk through the door its plate is holding open?

The door is checked after the slime steps off the plate, and by then nothing is holding it. Split instead, so the half that stays behind keeps the plate pressed while the other half goes through.

What happens when a slime runs out of mass?

It disappears, and the level cannot be finished from that position. The game tells you the slime is gone, and a single undo brings it back.
