About Skyline Tycoon

Skyline Tycoon is a property trading board game. You circle a board of world cities, buy what you land on, build towers on the sets you complete, and take rent off everyone who lands there afterwards. Landing on an unowned city gives you the choice to buy it or send it to auction, where the others bid against you — which is usually where a game is decided rather than on the dice.

Four ways to play. Guided is a shorter two-player game with prompts explaining what each decision means, for anyone who has not played this kind of board game before. World Tour is the full strategic match. Pass and Play hands one phone around a table. And Online puts you at a table with other people.

Online tables seat four. Anybody can open one and share the five-letter code, or take the next free seat. Chairs nobody has taken are covered by the game's own players — Rook the Baron buys everything he lands on, Nadia the Banker sits on cash and outlives people, Vega the Broker will offer you a deal every turn, Kit the Gambler wildly overbids on things she likes. They are marked AI wherever they appear, so you always know which of your opponents is a person.

That labelling matters more than it sounds. A table that quietly passed software off as strangers would make the word multiplayer meaningless here, and the first time somebody worked it out they would stop believing anything else on the site. So the game fills the room to keep it playable, and tells you what it filled it with.

Nobody is left waiting on somebody who has wandered off, either. If a player closes the tab mid-game their seat is taken over rather than freezing the board, and if the person whose device happens to be running the table leaves, another player picks it up from where it stopped.

Skyline Tycoon — frequently asked questions

Is Skyline Tycoon free?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download and no sign-up. Your game saves in the browser you play in.

Can I play with other people?

Yes. Choose Play Online and you are put at a table with anyone else looking for one, or share the five-letter code so a friend can join yours. Tables seat four.

What happens if nobody else is online?

The empty chairs are taken by the game's own players so you can start immediately rather than waiting. They are labelled AI everywhere they appear — the game never presents them as other people.

What if someone leaves in the middle of a game?

Their seat is taken over so the table keeps moving instead of stalling. The board itself survives too: if the player whose device is running the game leaves, another player picks it up from the last position.

How is this different from playing on one phone?

Pass and Play is the same board shared on one device, taking turns by handing it over. Online gives everyone their own screen, so nobody sees your cash or your cards.

Is the online game refereed by the server?

Partly, and it is worth being straight about it. The room controls the seating, whose turn it is and which decisions reach whom. The board itself runs on one player's device and is published to the others, so a determined cheat could in principle tamper with their own copy. It is a game night, not a ranked ladder.

How long does a game take?

Guided is around ten minutes. A full World Tour game runs longer, the way this kind of board game always has.

Can you play on a phone?

Yes. The board scales to the screen and the controls sit in a bar under it, sized for thumbs.
