About Quiz Party

Quiz Party is a quiz host in a browser tab. You write the questions, it runs the clock, keeps score and shows the leaderboard — the part a person usually has to do with a notepad and a lot of arguing.

There are two ways to play. Solo, or pass-the-device, puts the options on screen and you click your answer. Team mode turns the keyboard into a set of buzzers: up to six teams, one number key each, and the first key pressed wins the right to answer. The host then marks it correct or wrong, which keeps human judgement in the loop for answers a computer would score badly.

Scoring rewards speed rather than just accuracy. A correct answer is worth 500 points plus up to 500 more depending on how much time was left on the clock, so a room that all knows the answer is still separated by who knew it first.

How to play Quiz Party

The quiz ships with a short general knowledge round so you can see how it works, but the point is your own questions. Press New quiz, then add questions one at a time, or use 'Paste a list of questions' to bring in a whole round at once instead of typing into a form twenty times. Each quiz you make is saved in your browser and listed on the front screen.

Before starting, choose the mode and the seconds per question — twenty is the default, and shorter makes the speed bonus matter more. In team mode add your teams first; each one gets a number key as its buzzer. Quizzes can be exported to a file and imported again, which is how you move a quiz to another computer or share it with someone else.

How to play Quiz Party

  1. Under Your quizzes, pick the quiz you want with its round selector. Each entry shows how many questions it holds and has an Edit button and a ✕ to delete it. The list always keeps at least one quiz.
  2. In the editor, give the quiz a name and press + Add question. Type the question, fill in up to four answers and tick the circle beside the right one. ✕ remove deletes a question you no longer want.
  3. To bulk-load questions, use the paste box. Write each question on its own line with its answers underneath, put an asterisk in front of the correct one, and leave a blank line before the next question. Then press Add them.
  4. Press ← Done, then set the Mode and the Seconds per question. Any value from 5 to 120 seconds is accepted.
  5. For team mode, press + Add team until everyone is covered and type each team's name. The key shown beside each name, 1 to 6, is that team's buzzer.
  6. Press Start quiz. After each question, press Next question → or Enter. At the end a podium shows the final scores, and Play again replays the same quiz from zero.

Quiz Party tips and strategy

  • The clock freezes on a buzz. When a team presses its key, the timer stops and their possible score is fixed at that moment. The host can take as long as needed to hear the answer and judge it without costing anyone points.
  • Wrong buzzes are expensive. A team marked ✕ Wrong loses 100 points (a score never goes below zero) and is locked out of that question. The clock then restarts for everyone else, and if every team has been ruled out, the answer is revealed.
  • Teams answer aloud, not by clicking. In team mode the A to D options stay on screen as a reference, but clicking them does nothing. The buzzing team calls its answer and the host marks it.
  • True or false works. Any question with text and at least two answers is playable, so two-option and three-option questions are fine. Questions with a blank prompt or fewer than two answers are skipped quietly when the quiz starts.
  • Check your asterisks when pasting. If a pasted block has no asterisk, the first answer is treated as correct. Only the first four answers in a block are kept, and a block needs at least a question and two answers to be read.
  • Use teams for separate scores. Solo mode keeps a single score labelled "You". If several people share one laptop and want their own totals, set each person up as a team instead.
  • Watch the bar change colour. The timer bar turns from green to red once less than 30% of the time is left, which is a handy cue for the host to hurry the room along.

Running a good quiz night

Questions play in the order you wrote them, and Play again repeats that same order. Arrange a round deliberately: open with an easy question so every team gets on the scoreboard, and keep the hardest ones for the end, when the leaderboard is tight.

Pick the timer to suit the room. A long timer gives a host reading questions aloud time to finish before anyone can sensibly buzz, while a short one rewards quick recall and makes wrong buzzes riskier. Exported quizzes are saved as a .json file named after the quiz, so giving each round a clear name makes a folder of past quizzes easy to manage.

Quiz Party — frequently asked questions

Do players join on their own phones?

No. Quiz Party runs on one screen that everyone can see, with the keyboard as the buzzers. There is no room code and nothing to join. If you need everyone answering on their own device at the same time, this is not that — it is the pub-quiz shape, not the classroom-projector shape.

Is it free, and is there a sign-up?

It is free and there is no account. Nothing is uploaded — your quizzes are stored in your own browser on the device you wrote them on.

How many teams can play?

Up to six, because the buzzers are the number keys 1 to 6. In solo mode there is no limit; you just pass the device around.

How is the score worked out?

A correct answer scores 500 points, plus a speed bonus of up to another 500 based on how much of the timer was left. Answer instantly and you get close to 1000; answer as the clock runs out and you get close to 500.

Can I use it on a phone?

Solo mode works fine on a phone since you tap the answers. Team mode needs a keyboard for the buzzers, so it wants a laptop or a tablet with a keyboard attached.

Where do my quizzes go if I clear my browser?

They are deleted. There is no server copy, which is the trade for not needing an account. Use the Export button to save a quiz as a file first.

What happens when a team buzzes in and gets it wrong?

The host presses Wrong, that team loses 100 points and sits out the rest of the question. The clock restarts for the other teams, and if nobody is left, the correct answer is shown.

Can a question have fewer than four answers?

Yes. Any question with at least two filled-in answers is used, so true-or-false and three-option questions work. Questions without at least two answers are left out when the quiz starts.

Does Play again shuffle the questions?

No. Play again resets every score to zero and runs the same quiz again in the order the questions were written.
