a better target.

An arena where the reward for winning is becoming easier to hit. Orbs and kills lengthen your blade, and the same levels make you bigger and slower — and put a crown on your head that everybody else is chasing.

About Overreach

Overreach is a free browser arena for up to ten fighters. You start small and quick with a short blade. Collecting orbs and cutting down rivals levels you up, and every level does the same three things at once: your blade gets longer, your body gets bigger, and you get slower. There is no build that is good at everything, and there is no point at which growing stops costing you something.

The rule the whole game turns on is that a blade only cuts along its outer half. The dull inner half passes straight through people. That means the most dangerous player on the floor has a ring of safety around them that you can stand inside, and the dash — which makes you untouchable while it lasts — is how you get there. Being out-ranged is a problem you solve by closing, not by running.

The leader wears a crown and everyone hunts the crown, so a runaway lead is its own punishment. Dying costs you levels rather than ending the run, which keeps a bad minute from being a wasted one.

Stages, power-ups and live play

Five stages escalate together rather than one at a time: more rivals, sharper reactions, a smaller floor, fewer orbs, and a pack that starts levels ahead of you. Clear a stage by reaching its target level to unlock the next. Five power-ups drop throughout — Haste, Fury, Longarm, Ward and Feast — and the computer fighters go for them too, so a pickup is something you contest rather than collect.

Live Arena puts ten seats on one floor. Any seat nobody has taken is played by the computer and is labelled AI on the leaderboard, so you always know which fighters are people. The match is five minutes and the highest level takes it. Solo play needs no connection at all — if live is down, every stage still works.

How to play Overreach

Move with WASD, the arrow keys, or by dragging on a touchscreen. Your blade points at the mouse. Click or press SPACE to swing, and SHIFT or right-click to dash.

Level up and you are offered three evolutions to choose between, each with a gain and a cost. Pick the one that suits the fight you are in rather than the one with the biggest number.

Overreach — frequently asked questions

Is Overreach free to play?

Yes. It runs in the browser with no download and no sign-up. An account is only useful if you want your progress to follow you to another device.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only for the Live Arena. All five stages play offline once the page has loaded.

Am I playing against real people?

In the Live Arena you can be. A room has ten seats and any seat nobody has taken is played by the computer, marked AI on the leaderboard. Solo play is entirely against the computer.

How do I beat someone with a much longer blade?

Get inside it. A blade only cuts along its outer half, so the space close to a big fighter is safe, and dashing makes you untouchable long enough to reach it. Backing away is what gets you killed.

What happens when I die?

You lose levels and respawn a few seconds later. The run does not end, so a bad fight costs you progress rather than the session.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Drag anywhere to move, and use the Swing and Dash buttons under the arena.
