About Scrapline Express

Scrapline Express is a side-view shooter about an armoured train crossing a frontier that stopped being governed some time ago. Ten stops stand between you and Haven, each one guarded by a raider boss with a pattern of its own, and between the stops there is a platform covered in salvage and a storm coming in behind you.

The gun is the whole game. It runs hot, and it keeps time. Every shot adds heat and the barrel jams for two full seconds when the gauge fills, which in the middle of a fight is how people die out here. What stops that happening is rhythm: a short window opens after each shot, and a shot fired inside it does more than twice the damage for barely any heat at all. Hold the trigger down and you get a slow, weak trickle. Mash it and you jam. Find the beat and the same gun becomes about three times the weapon it was.

Everything else is a decision about greed. Three crates at each station are the job; the fourth, fifth and sixth are worth progressively more and bring the raiders and the storm on faster. Scrap buys a longer barrel, a wider timing window, a cooler jacket — and none of it matters if you never stayed long enough to earn it. Every kill without being hit links a chain that multiplies your score up to eight times, and a single hit takes all of it back.

How to play Scrapline Express

Walk the platform with A and D. Stand next to a crate and hold E to lift it — sealed crates take longer and the noise brings raiders. Three crates opens the ladder at the engine; press E there to board.

Fire with F or by tapping the screen. Do not hold it. Fire, wait for the marker to reach the green band, fire again — that is the rhythm the whole game is built on, and it is the difference between finishing the run and dying somewhere around stop six.

Between stops you are on the moving train and a boss is out there. Jump low shots with Space, duck high ones with S, and climb the ladder to the roof to change the angle. The boss has to go down before the train can arrive.

At the workshop, spend scrap on the gun first, then patch up your crew and repair the hull, then pick a road. The riskier road is cheaper in fuel and richer in salvage.

Scrapline Express — frequently asked questions

Can I just hold the fire button?

You can, and you will lose. Holding the trigger fires on a slow cadence for base damage and steadily cooks the barrel; in testing it reaches about stop six of ten before the run ends. Playing to the rhythm finishes the campaign and scores roughly thirty times higher. That gap is the game.

What is the perfect window?

A short slice of time that opens about a third of a second after each shot, shown as a green band on the strip below the heat gauge. A shot fired inside it does 2.15 times damage for about a third of the heat and links your combo chain. The Timing Sear upgrade makes the window wider.

What is the shockwave for?

It is the panic button. One press clears every raider and every bullet within a wide radius and staggers a boss, then goes on a sixteen-second cooldown. It exists so that being surrounded is something you can recover from rather than something that simply kills you, and it is the difference between a hard game and an unfair one.

Why did my gun stop working?

It jammed. The heat gauge filled, usually because you were mashing — firing faster than the window costs double heat. It clears itself after about two seconds. If it keeps happening, slow down: the rhythm is slower than mashing and does far more damage.

How long is a run?

Ten stops, ten bosses, roughly ten to twelve minutes if you make it all the way to Haven. Most first runs end well before that. Progress is not saved between runs — the score is the thing you carry forward.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The on-screen pad has move, fire, use and jump, and because the skill is in when you tap rather than where you aim, one thumb on the fire button is exactly as expressive as a keyboard.
